In 2018 Jill Gillanders met these young people one dark night in a church porch who said they just wanted somewhere to go. Coincidently, she had recently seen a TV documentary on County Lines showing how drug dealers target young people...
These young people inspired, encouraged and supported Jill and a group of adults over many months to form a youth club.
Thirsk Youth Club became a registered charity in July 2021.
TYC is passionate about high-quality, trauma-aware youth provision for young people. Building on trusting relationships in a safe space, it's possible to support young people with positive experiences that help them manage their emotions, make good choices, stay in school and reach significant milestones as young adults. This can be life-changing.

From 2018 we tried to find a venue to run a youth club in Thirsk but this was really difficult. We started to consider a double-decker Youth Bus. But then Covid-19 happened. When lock-down eased we began meeting in a car park with just some squash, Greggs snacks and a football. Eventually we managed to hire E Thirsk Community Hall one night a week. Starting with just 6 young people TYC grew quickly and more sessions were added in response to demand. TYC moved to its present rented premises in April 2025 and now runs 4 sessions every week for different age groups aged 9-18 and is still growing as it aims to respond to the needs of young people in Thirsk.
